What Is GPS/GIS? |
||
|
GPS/GIS is an activity you can do anywhere. Literally anywhere, because
you use a device called a GPS unit. A GPS unit is a small handheld
device that shows where you are, what way you are facing, the Latitude
and Longitude, and more. GPS units are usually cheap, in the range of
$10-$50, but if you want a really accurate unit, the price range is $100
and up (and that's if you look on E-Bay). There are also GPS units for
your car, which are in the price range of $70-$150. The price of the
unit usually reflects it's quality.
GIS is taking the data from a handheld GPS unit and putting it on a computer, then mapping it to make all different kinds of maps. People get paid an average of $43,538 a year to make maps with GPS data.
Geocaching is a hobby in which you take a GPS unit, and enter coordinates from www.geocaching.com into your GPS and go out and look for a container hidden somewhere. The point is not to just search, but enjoy your surroundings and have fun. |
